Mastering Anno 1701 is fundamentally about mastering its production chains. Each chain is a puzzle, and the entire game is an interconnected web of these puzzles. Start with simple fisheries and lumber camps, slowly add cloth and alcohol production, and eventually build toward the complex perfume and jewelry industries that will crown your empire.
Water-dependent chains like the Flour Mill or Textile Mill (if near rivers) might slow down, requiring you to have a surplus stored in your Warehouse to weather the "drought." Meat: Cattle → Pasture/Butcher → Meat Your population
Do not force your market carts to travel across the entire island. Group your production chains tightly around a single Market Building. For example, place two Sheep Farms directly adjacent to a Weaver’s Hut so the weaver can pull wool directly from the farms without waiting for a market cart.
Place these along your coastline. They do not require fertility and provide a steady, cheap food supply for lower-tier citizens. Cloth (Sheep Farm →right arrow Weaver’s Hut) Settlers demand clothing to upgrade to Citizens. Ratio: 2 Sheep Farms : 1 Weaver's Hut If you share with third parties, their policies apply
To modernize the classic production chains while keeping its distinctive charm, here are several feature concepts categorized by how they would change the gameplay loop. 1. Supply Chain Visualization & Logistics
As your population matures into Citizens, they demand luxury goods that require more advanced logistics and multi-island shipping routes. Tobacco Products (Tobacco Leaves & Cigars)
Your city layout directly impacts efficiency. Try to leave spaces for (like Taverns, Churches, and Schools) from the very start. A common advanced tip is that 2 resource buildings (raw) can supply 1 production building (finished) . For example, 2 Cattle Farms can supply 1 Butcher to produce meat. The cornerstone of your supply chain is the warehouse. Connect every production building to a marketplace or warehouse by a road for your goods to be stored and distributed. Inefficient travel times cause production to halt. A perfectly laid-out city can be the difference between a stable 10,000-person metropolis and a chaotic ghost town.
